Internship Satellite de-orbiting device (start September 2022)
What is the internship about?
There is an increasing number of satellites in LEO predominantly due to large constellations required for the growing market of satellite communication services. To avoid orbital saturation, there is a critical need to develop simple, readily available de-orbiting devices that the small satellite industry is willing to adopt. Space debris management is becoming more crucial, and we are all responsible for a clean space.
Demcon uses a system engineering approach to develop a de-orbiting drag device. Feasibility study and concept generation phases for active and passive de-orbiting devices are already completed. A start with feasibility study and concept generation has been made to kick-start the project. The goal of this internship is to design and prototype a de-orbiting drag device that can fit in 1U volume of small satellites to de-orbit them from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) when the satellite is end of life. Targeted improvement is to reduce de-orbit time by a factor of 5 (for altitudes of 450-650km) in comparison to natural orbit decay.
What will your day look like?
- review and improve upon the feasibility study and
generated concepts up to now
- select the best concept
- make a mechanical design of the selected concept
- manufacture a prototype (e.g. from 3D printed parts)
- verify the design with functional tests
- report the work described above
- plan and organize the activities mentioned above
In this project, you will interact with different disciplines like mechatronics engineering and mechanical engineering.
Demcon Advanced Mechatronics is founded in 1993 as a start-up from the Twente University of Technology. Since then, it has evolved to company delivering top-quality products and solutions with sites across the Netherlands and abroad. The Space department, part of the High Tech Systems business unit, is focusing on optical communication, ground-based astronomy and space debris management.
