Over the last years, Demcon has been active in designing, assembling, integrating, testing and providing our customer with innovative vitrification technology (HERE you can read more about it). This technology significantly boosts and accelerates research on typical diseases as mentioned in the aforementioned link. As a result of our contribution, our customer can intensify the research on this process by means of Cryo-EM equipment and verify the performance of their systems at their launching customers’ facilities. Simultaneously, Demcon continues to work on further improving and expanding the product range over the coming years. Now the first devices have found their way to the (end) customers, a need has emerged for a Sr Application Engineer who will manage this portfolio: interfacing between the technical Demcon team developing the device, including the team of our partner, and their clients performing actual research on the process while using the device, providing feedback on the performance.
This is how your role as Sr Application Engineer looks like:
As Sr Application Engineer you’re responsible for a healthy and successful vitrification portfolio. This is done primarily by optimizing the co-operation between the Demcon development team and the team of the client. You are the key person, deciding with the customer which new requirements the next generation of vitrification technology /-device has to satisfy and how to get there, taking into account what is technically viable. While enjoying this challenge, you are closely working together with the technical lead plus project manager of Demcon and the team of our customer. At the same time, you are comfortable with the devices to such extend that you’re capable of addressing most of the issues the (end)customers encounter; the team of Demcon experts will support you in this. As you are actively keeping up with the progress made in the area of life science, focusing on the developments in the Cryo-EM workflow, you are able to come up with proposals how targeted process improvements translate into relevant device enhancements / new features, continuously adding value to our (end) customer’s proposition.
What do you offer
- MSc in Physics, Mechanical, Electronics, Mechatronics
- A specialist in, or experience with (Cryo)-EM is a plus
- A sense of mutual relationships, knowing how to connect all parties; strong communication skills
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in a role of Product Owner of a complex mechatronic system
- Both comfortable in the academic world as well as capable of thinking and acting commercially
- A teamplayer taking responsibility and ownership in-and outside the project; hands-on mentality
- Being an engineer by origin, you very much enjoy bringing and keeping together all stakeholders
- Demcon culture compliant: creative, social, can-and-will-do-mentality, engaged, customer focused
- Willing and able to regularly visit our customer (south of the Netherlands) and (global) end customers
What do we offer
At Demcon you will find yourself in a growing and innovative company. Entrepreneurial as we are, we are fully committed to solve complex technical challenges. With our multidisciplinary teams we take ownership in projects by providing our customers with working solutions, offering them added value. This creates a lot of possibilities for you, variety and opportunities to develop your career. Both via great projects as well as the Demcon Academy, you are getting every chance to grow. We encourage own initiatives and facilitate this by providing the right conditions. A competitive salary and flexible employment conditions further complete our proposition.
Thanks to our enthusiastic and committed colleagues, the company’s culture can be described as informal and open with short communication lines. As Demcon we have a very active staff association, organizing all kinds of outings, activities on a regular basis, including an annual Demcon week-end.

Additional information Sr Application Engineer
In structural biology, part of molecular biology, scientists are performing cutting edge research with high-tech imaging equipment to unravel yet unknown secrets of nature. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) plays a key role in unraveling the three-dimensional structure of macromolecules and their cellular functions. This knowledge contributes to developing new medicines and treatments for diseases as cancer, Alzheimer, TBC and AIDS. Successful vitrification of biological materials is required to preserve the biological samples in their native state. Optimization of the sample preparation process greatly contributes to workflow effectiveness and efficiency. Analyses by means of Cryo-EM will shift from ‘high content’-technology to ‘high throughput’-solution, in which sample preparation is the key enabling technology. Our client is dedicated to providing such high-end sample preparation solutions.
