One way of approaching this intermediate solution is to divert from using virgin plastics and move towards a more sustainable alternative to virgin plastics. For example using biodegradable plastics or recycled plastics. This brings about new challenges such as material degradation over product lifetime, material purity and cost of alternatives to virgin plastics.

    There are two main problems with replacing disposables in the medical industry. First of all, in the current economy, most disposable parts are part of the business case of the developer. Since disposables are often made out of plastics and the raw material for plastics is available for a low price, making low-cost products and selling them with a high throughput has become financially attractive. In order to transform to a fully reusable product, the business model must change.

    Secondly, the medical industry is a high-risk industry in which patient safety is of great importance. Over time, the hygienic standards have increased significantly due to which disposables (which have not been in excessive contact with human tissue before use) have become common. With the transition from disposable to reusable products, it should be investigated how to maintain these high hygienic standards without using a linear chain. Not only must the cleaning itself be investigated, but also the whole organization around collection, transport, post-treatment and restorage.

    Project: Observer-based and repetitive control for a peristaltic pump

    Demcon is a company that develops a variety of new high-tech mechatronic systems such as the peristaltic pump system shown in Figure 1. During the design phase, a closed-loop controller was required that regulates the behavior of the system. Traditionally, linear PID-type controllers are designed due to their simplicity and wide use in industry. However, linear PID controllers are limited in suppressing disturbances close to or beyond the bandwidth. 

    To overcome these limitations in view of disturbance rejection, one can use disturbance observer based control  (DOBC) as an add-on to classical PID control. Using DOBC, a real-time estimation of the actual disturbance to the system is made and instantly compensated. In literature, several methods and implementations of DOBC are found. In an earlier project, an M.Sc graduation student implemented an inversion-based DOBC controller for the peristaltic pump system, thereby making use of plant inversion to estimate the disturbance. Although the demonstrated performance improvement was promising, the method itself suffered from some strict constraints regarding causality and stability because inversion-based DOBC is mainly intended for random unknown disturbances.

    The goal of this assignment is to replace the inversion-based DOBC by an alternative DOBC method that exploits the periodic nature of disturbances present in peristaltic pumps. Namely, if the disturbances are assumed to be periodic, the strict design constraints related to inversion-based DOBC could be relaxed such that further improvements become possible. A first step would be to design and implement a time-domain repetitive controller (or any other DOBC method that suffices) to improve performance by aiming at a constant rotational speed of the pump. As a second step, a transition to the position domain could be made to make the compensation independent of the actual pump speed. Third, one could add a flow sensor to reduce the flow ripple (which is a primary performance measure of the pump). An alternative development is the implementation of a flow ripple disturbance observer to obtain the same performance improvements but without the need of a flow sensor.

    Medical devices are often mobile: either portable or mounted on a trolley . Mostly during transport, these devices  are exposed to shocks. For transport outside the hospital (e.g., by train, car, airplane) sometimes the device can be packed to reduce the impact of the shocks, if necessary. For transport inside the hospital, it is often preferable to transport the device without packaging. Examples of shocks are moving the trolley-mounted device over a doorstep or dropping/colliding the device. The design of the device needs to be such that the device survives these shocks.

    One method of analyzing shocks and determining severity is called Shock Response Spectrum (SRS) (please read the article). However, shock severity thresholds are based on military standards, and construction methods and safety factors will differ from the way medical devices are designed at Demcon. Besides, this theory is not accepted everywhere, and clear application examples are yet missing.
