Graduation: Fatigue resistant carbon fiber flexure
Organization
Each one of our companies differentiates itself in its own domain with unique expertise and skills. This way they help customers improve their performance and achieve more. On the basis of their passion for technology our companies are able to combine forces. By sharing knowledge and working together we increase our social impact. Demcon advanced mechatronics is a multidisciplinary development and engineering partner for mechatronic challenges, from concept to realization.
Function
Duration of thesis project: 9 months
For a linkage mechanism, the design team has chosen the common solutions that are considered proven technology.
- A light-weight drive rod made of fatigue resistant tooling steel.
- A flexure made of this same fatigue resistant tooling steel
- A carriage that is a combination of metal interfaces and a carbon fiber back-bone. This carriage is supported on a linear guide system.
The system will undergo high accelerations and all the components are performing to the peak of their specifications.
One limiting factor of this architecture is the sum of the masses of these 3 components. The aim of this assignment is to create a solution that has a reduced mass, thus enabling higher payloads on the carrier.
The goal of the assignment is to create an integrated carbon fiber solution that comprises the functions of the drive rod, flexure and carriage that reduces the mass of the construction. This requires adhering to / developing construction guide lines for composite constructions and prediction on life time of the construction (fatigue-type behavior).
Requirements
We are looking for a talented student of mechanical or aerospace engineering with a specialization in composite materials. You are driven, eager to learn and easy to communicate with. Also, you are not afraid of tackling difficult problems and have an affinity for numerical simulations. A high degree of independence is expected.
- Education level: Master student
- Required education: Mechanical engineering or physics with a specialization in composite materials
